Care Inspectorate Wales
Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) is the independent regulator of social care and childcare in Wales, registering and inspecting services on behalf of
Welsh Ministers under the Regulation and Inspection of Social Care (Wales) Act 2016. Inspections assess well-being, care and support, the environment, and leadership and management, and are usually unannounced. Since 2025, CIW awards a rating on a four-point scale, from Excellent to Requires significant improvement, against each theme for care homes and domiciliary support services, with routine care home inspections scheduled roughly every 18 months.
